I'd like to "triple ditto" what the two people before have said about the sound quality...very iffy.

...and Kirk Douglas plays it absolutely to the hilt. This is not Hollywood's image of the psychopath as a demented serial killer, but an accurate portrayal of the type: the glib swindler, complete with over-inflated ego, an intelligence that manifests as low animal cunning, and a complete callous disregard for anyone and anything but himself. Firmly believing in Survival of the Fittest (and in their own fitness for survival), the psychopath's main advantage lies in the element of surprise-- that most people can scarcely credit the existence of someone so devoid of the human qualities (empathy, compassion, morals, etc.) that make social life possible, even when they are confronted by the actions of such a person. All of these elements are powerfully and accurately portrayed by Kirk's character, and by the responses of the other characters to his. Well written, and a fine performance.
What fronzel said about the sound track, though. Even with the sound turned down low, my ears were hurting by the end. (It didn't help that I was listening though headphones.) The print is a bit blurry, with the colors somewhat faded. One star off, for an otherwise five-star film.

Yes, it's a quite unusual theme - who'd be interested in a movie about lumberjacks by default? But the whole story turns out to be much more interesting and higher paced than the title may make you believe. The storyline is something you could discuss about for life - there are probably better stories and more logical turning points in movies, but what counts is that it's still an entertaining movie. Unlike other reviewers i think Kirk Douglas still did a good performance here and i think if you haven't slept during the movie about 99% of all actions in the movie can be regarded as "still logical".
The Picture of the movie is still in quite good shape - not really the colors you would expect from last week's blockbuster, but for the age the color got preserved quite well and the picture is sharper and with better colors than most other movies that have had their colors washed out over the decades.
What is really really bad about this movie is the sound track - i am really surprised none of the other reviewers commented this. I have really downloaded lods of public domain movies from the lowest quality, but in "The Big trees" it sounds like someone tried to play the soundtrack on his 2000 watts Pioneer stereo with 2 dollar PC speakers attached. I have never before experienced such a bad overdriven sound in a movie.
I am wondering why none of the other reviewers noted that as this is such a bad sound, i had to hold back to not start my review like "OMG, the sound, the SOUND!!!". I downloaded the 2 GB MPEG-2 version which definitely has the sound BADLY flawed, maybe i will give the other versions a try.

A decent Kirk Douglas movie with enough action to satisfy. I didn't expect it to be entertaining, but it did well.

If you like to watch movies, this is a movie. Kind of pointless and inane but well made in color. It would difficult to make cutting down trees interesting and you can see just how difficult by watching this movie.

The show was good in that a crook changed his ways. It had a touch of romance. The movie was good.

Kirk Douglas... What can I say? He does an outstanding performance in this movie and has a lot of top stars backing him up all the way. This movie keeps you on edge waiting and guessing what he and his best friend as well as a multitude of others in the cast will do next. This show will keep you in suspense right up to the end. I loved it and Kirk as far as I know has never starred in a bad production. This has some really beautiful scenery, color and the script is well written. Another fine show you've gotten me into.
